During the week ended Oct. 11, U.S. railroads didn't set another weekly intermodal-traffic record, but they came close. Roads moved 207,806 trailers or containers — the third highest-ever weekly total, according to Association of American Railroads data released Oct. 16.

U.S. roads' four highest-ever weekly intermodal-traffic totals occurred during the past five weeks.

Through the year's first 41 weeks, U.S. roads moved 7,772,869 trailers or containers, a 6.7 percent increase compared with the same 2002 period.

Canadian railroads have boosted weekly and year-to-date intermodal traffic, too. During the week of Oct. 11, the roads moved 45,146 trailers and containers, up 4.3 percent, and through 2003's first 41 weeks moved 1,705,473 trailers and containers, up 7.1 percent, compared with similar 2002 periods.

On a combined cumulative-volume basis through 41 weeks, 15 reporting U.S. and Canadian roads moved 9,478,342 trailers and containers, a 6.8 percent increase compared with the same 2002 period.
