The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) recently bestowed its 2022 Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence Award to CSX and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for the Carolina Connector Intermodal Terminal (CCX) project.

The two award recipients worked together to create the 310-acre CCX terminal in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, which opened in late 2021. The facility is the newest and most advanced, state-of-the-art intermodal terminal on CSX’s system, according to the Class I. It features three wide-span, automated electric cranes and has a lift capacity of 110,000 containers per year.

"CCX is one of our most technologically advanced terminals and we're proud to see it recognized for innovation," CSX officials said in a tweet.

CSX contributed $40 million for the project — which began in 2019 — and is operating the facility, while NCDOT provided $118 million for site development and road construction work. The terminal enables the North Carolina Ports Authority to offer the Wilmington Midwest Express, a daily direct freight-rail service to the Midwest.

"The Carolina Connector Intermodal Terminal is a state-of-the-art facility built to serve the region and help move goods across the country," AREMA officials said in a tweet about the award-winning project.

The Dr. William W. Hay Award for Excellence Award honors the memory of William Walter Hay, a longtime AREMA contributor and professor of railway civil engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Each year, the association bestows the award to projects that best illustrate safety, innovation and service performance reliability.
