Air emissions continue to plummet at L.A. port

New data from four air quality monitoring stations shows the Port of Los Angeles decreased emissions in 2010 for the fourth-straight year, according to the port. The stations track emissions from the ships, trains, trucks, terminal equipment and harbor vessels that move cargo through the nation’s largest container port.
Elemental carbon emissions in some areas dropped to the lowest levels since air quality monitoring began in 2005 even though cargo volumes rose 16 percent compared with 2009, port officials said in a prepared statement. In addition, some concentrations of particulate matter emissions met federal and state standards for the third-straight year.
“We are living up to our Clean Air Action Plan commitment — we pledged to cut port-related emissions by 45 percent, and these results show that for diesel exhaust, we did more,” said Port of L.A. Executive Director Geraldine Knatz.
