The Alabama Port Authority, in partnership with CSX, last week broke ground on a new rail facility in Montgomery.

Located on a 272-acre site, the future Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) will operate five days a week, offering express daily service from the Port in Mobile to Alabama’s automotive and manufacturing hub in Montgomery, authority officials said in a press release.

Additionally, ICTF will relieve stress on the interstate system as the Port sees additional cargo volume following the deepening of Mobile Harbor, they said.

CSX will serve the facility, shifting freight from highways onto rail, said Christina Bottomley, CSX vice president of business develop and real estate.

The Montgomery ICTF is slated to open in 2027. It will be similar in appearance to an ICTF near the Port of Mobile.
