Burlington Northern Santa Fe recently purchased 8.9 acres of land at CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Ellwood, Ill., from CenterPoint Properties Trust. The parcel is adjacent to BNSF Logistics Park, a 621-acre intermodal yard the railroad opened in October 2002.

BNSF plans to use the land to handle container and automobile overflows caused by the yard's steadily increasing traffic.

Meanwhile, CenterPoint Properties has announced plans to build a 216,000-square-foot paper-conversion plant and 213,500-square-foot high-speed distribution facility at the Chicago-area intermodal center. Both projects are expected to be completed in first-quarter 2004.

"Our existing customers, as well as potential customers, are realizing that the availability of on-site intermodal services … can have a significant impact on their bottom line," said Sean Maher, CenterPoint Properties senior vice president of investments, in a prepared statement.
