Swedish furniture and home furnishings retailer IKEA recently obtained a few tips on transportation logistics from BNSF Railway Co.

Earlier this month, IKEA officials visited BNSF's Fort Worth, Texas, headquarters to "better understand the complexities of the transportation industry and gain insight on a number of issues, including employee safety, environmental and legislative regulations, and procurement opportunities," according to a prepared statement.

During the two-day visit, officials obtained information on fire prevention, fuel procurement and storage, and handling/disposal of noise, water, air and ground pollution.

Last year, BNSF moved 326 intermodal loads for IKEA through BNSF Logistics, APL Logistics and Interstate Distributors. The company's stores in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas and Washington are located near BNSF lines. IKEA plans to open 50 more U.S. stores by 2013.
