Rail News: Intermodal

BNSF serves another super-sized container ship at Long Beach port

On Aug. 15, Burlington Northern Santa Fe provided eastbound intermodal service to the second gigantic container ship arriving at the Port of Long Beach, Calif., within two weeks.

Operated by France's CMA CGM shipping line, the 8,200-TEU (20-foot equivalent units) "Hugo" is 1,096 feet — or more than three football fields — long and 140 feet wide. Hugo carries enough cargo to completely fill a 1 million-square-foot shopping center with retail products stacked eight-feet high.

BNSF moved containers to eastern destination points for CMA, one of the Class I's international customers.

Earlier this month, the railroad moved eastbound containers for the 8,500 TEU capacity "CSCL Asia," which is owned and operated by China Shipping Container Lines.
