Rail News: Intermodal
On Oct. 15, BNSF Railway Co. loaded its 1 millionth container at southern California on-dock facilities — the first time the railroad reached that mark in a calendar year.
As part of an on-dock initiative, the Class I is working with steamship companies, marine terminals and ports to load more containers at southern California on-dock facilities instead of the railroad’s Hobart intermodal terminal, which is located about 20 miles from Los Angeles’ waterfront.
“Increasing the amount of international traffic loaded on-dock is critical to the escalating international trade,” said BNSF Vice President of International Marketing Fred Malesa in a prepared statement.
During the past 18 months, the Class I has completed other initiatives aimed at increasing intermodal train productivity and velocity in the L.A. area. BNSF currently averages 66 eastbound train departures a week compared with 52 in 2005.
