Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley last week announced that business remained strong for the Port of Baltimore through the third quarter and volume remained ahead of last year's pace in several cargo categories.

Through the year's first nine months, the port handled 7.21 million tons of cargo, a 10 percent increase compared with the same 2011 period. The port registered nearly 30 million tons of foreign commerce (general plus bulk cargo), up 6 percent year over year.

Through September, volumes of certain cargos — including containers and autos — exceeded last year's pace. The port's record for general cargo volume is 8.96 million tons set in 2008; last year's total of 8.89 million tons was the second-highest amount, said O'Malley in a prepared statement.

In addition, the port's total dollar value of cargo through the third quarter was up 10 percent over last year's record total, he said.

Canton Railroad Co. provides switching services at the port, which is served by CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway.
