Bridge collapses after container ship strike at Port of Baltimore

An active search and rescue is underway at the Port of Baltimore after a Maersk-chartered container ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse into a river early this morning. 

Rescue workers are looking for as many as six people, news media reported. Vessel traffic into and out of the port is suspended until further notice, but trucks are still being processed inside port terminals, the port's website states. Both CSX and Norfolk Southern Railroad offer intermodal rail service from the port.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency. The National Transportation Safety Board has sent a team to investigate the bridge's collapse and will hold a media briefing later today.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on social media site X that there are no indications at this time that the crash was an intentional incident.

The ship, "Dali," can carry 10,000 20-foot shipping containers, and was operating on a route between Baltimore and Asia, CNN reported.
