CN and Norfolk Southern Railway yesterday announced they'll launch a domestic intermodal service that will use new intermodal steel-wheel interchanges in Detroit and Chicago to seamlessly operate like a single-line intermodal product.
Available Oct. 2, the new option for customers will convert truck traffic to long-haul rail, CN and NS officials said in a press release.
Converting to long-haul rail will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and customers’ overall carbon footprint. Integrated rail interchanges also provide customers with the opportunity to optimize their cargo loaded weights, they said.
The service combines intermodal services for the two Class Is' shared customers, said NS President and CEO Alan Shaw.
"Designed with customer-centricity top of mind, it simplifies their processes, enabling smoother rail shipments between Canada, Kansas City and Atlanta," Shaw added.
