Canadian National Railway Co. has found a way to expedite customs clearance for shippers and generate more border-crossing business. Yesterday, the Class I launched Customs Clearance Services for shipments entering Canada from the United States or overseas.

CN will arrange to have merchandise and intermodal shipments cleared electronically through Canada Customs, including freight arriving at Canadian ports — a benefit for the Class I’s freight forwarding subsidiary CN WorldWide.

Customs Clearance Services will obtain the release of imported goods and delivery instructions; pay applicable duties; prepare, present or transmit necessary documents or data; maintain records; and respond to any Canada Border Services Agency issues after payment.

“By offering customers value-added, competitively priced customs clearance services, we're making it simpler for them to do business with us,” said James Foote, CN executive vice president of sales and marketing, in a prepared statement.
