CSX and the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) have jointly launched a direct rail service between the Port of Savannah and Rocky Mount, North Carolina, via the CSX Carolina Connector (CCX) intermodal terminal. The seven-day-per-week intermodal service targets North Carolina importers and exporters seeking a faster supply chain, CSX and GPA officials said in a press release. Trains will move from the GPA’s Mason Mega Rail Terminal in Savannah and Rocky Mount, offering a three-day, ship-to-shore transit time. “The integration of GPA’s on-dock rail and the inland port at CCX signifies a leap forward in providing efficient, sustainable and dynamic rail-to-truck inland port container service for our customers,” said Kevin Boone, CSX's executive vice president of sales and marketing who today became the Class I's EVP and chief commercial officer. “Through this strategic collaboration with the GPA and our ongoing partnership with the state of North Carolina and North Carolina Ports, CSX is charting a new course in logistics excellence.”The 85-acre Mason Mega Rail Terminal features 24 miles of on-terminal track, making it the largest intermodal facility on a port in the Americas, with the capacity to grow future cargo volumes, GPA officials said.“Customers can get access to cargo more quickly on the CCX service because Savannah is a first port of call for ocean carriers transiting the Panama Canal,” said GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch. “Containers are ready for pick up at CCX before they can even be unloaded from a vessel at other ports further up the coast.”
