CSXI scores success with chassis pool program

CSX Intermodal (CSXI) is deriving benefits from its chassis pool program, which was launched last year.

The company created a standard chassis pool to accommodate all international containerized shipments. Before, chassis arrived at yards in various sizes, making it difficult for CSXI to match chassis to containers and maintain a variety of equipment.

“With our new chassis program, our terminal capacity has expanded, congestion is reduced and assets are managed more efficiently,” said CSXI President Jim Hertwig in a prepared statement.

CSXI has rolled out the program in Tampa, Fla., for Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association members and Columbus, Ohio, in conjunction with equipment management firm Rail Pool.

Later this year, CSXI plans to implement the program at terminals in Cleveland; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Fla.; Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.; East St. Louis, Ill.; and Savannah, Ga.
