CSXI's truck dispatching device helps reduce driver turnover, traffic center calls

A wireless truck dispatching tool is helping CSX Intermodal reduce truck driver turnover and handle fewer traffic-center calls.

In May 2004, CSXI provided 450 owner-operators Air2Web’s 2CRM device, which is designed to receive and transmit data. Drivers use the tool to notify dispatchers about shipment pick-ups drop-offs, and obtain delivery assignments; dispatchers use the device to alert drivers about upcoming shipments. Drivers previously used cell phones to call the traffic center and issue reports on shipments or receive delivery assignments.

During the past year, CSXI’s traffic center has handled 45 percent fewer calls and driver turnover has dropped from 80 percent to 50 percent.

Later this month, CSXI plans to add a feature that alerts drivers about a new pick-up or delivery via an audible sound or vibrating pulse so drivers don’t take their eyes off the road. CSXI also is considering a Global Positioning Satellite feature.
