The California State Transportation Agency this week issued a call for applications for $1.2 billion in funding set aside for freight and port infrastructure projects that lead to a more efficient, sustainable and resilient supply chain, according to a press release issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom's office.
The infrastructure grant program aims to make long-term upgrades that will increase California's capacity to move goods while lessening the environmental impact on communities. About 70% of funding will go to projects that will support goods movement through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, while 30% will fund ports and goods movement infrastructure throughout the state.
Project applications are due Jan. 13, 2023, with awards to be announced in March 2023. For more information and to apply, click here.
Meanwhile, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) received $300 million from the state of California to advance plans to move train tracks off of the bluffs in Del Mar.
The bluffs, which are next to the shoreline, are eroding due to a gradual rise in sea level, leading to major safety concerns for the trains that operate in the area. The tracks are part of the 351-mile Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo corridor.
Amtrak and North County Transit District passenger trains and BNSF Railway Co. freight trains use the line.
The funds will be used in part to plan and develop a proposal for where and how to move the tracks, 10 News San Diego reported. The current idea is to build a 2-mile tunnel in Del Mar.
The planning process is expected to take at least two years, 10 News reported.
