The Canadian government has allowed the Oshawa and Hamilton port authorities to form the new Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority, Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced this week.

Both located in Ontario, the Port of Hamilton and Port of Oshawa each are served by Canadian Pacific and CN.

The new port authority, which will go into effect June 18, will maintain regular port operations in Hamilton and Oshawa.

Combining the authorities will help strengthen economic opportunity in the region, enable a coordinated approach to port development and help broaden multimodal transportation options in the greater Toronto area, government officials said in a press release.

The Oshawa Port Authority was established in 2012, and the Hamilton Port Authority in 2001. Both port authorities carry similar commodities, including steel, project cargo and bulk cargo, such as fertilizers, asphalt and grain.
