Canada completes intermodal access project in Edmonton

Canadian government officials yesterday announced the completion of the Queen Elizabeth (QE) II Highway and 41 Avenue Southwest Intermodal Access project in Edmonton, Alberta, which included a grade separation for a new Canadian Pacific intermodal facility.

The $205 million project (in Canadian dollars) is part of Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor initiative to improve global supply chains between North America and Asia.

The project involved the construction of the interchange on the QEII Highway and 41 Avenue SW, including the grade separation for CP's intermodal facility; realignment of QEII Highway from south of 41 Avenue SW to Ellerslie Road; a bridge crossing Blackmud Creek; and realignment and upgrading of 41 Avenue SW, according to a Transport Canada press release.

The project was funded with up to $75 million from the Canadian government through the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Transportation Infrastructure Fund; $57.5 million from the province of Alberta; and $72.5 million from the city of Edmonton.

"This project will provide for increased capacity, reduced logistics costs and improved access for local industries, while at the same time making for a much safer and more efficient drive for shippers, tourists and other motorists," said Amarjeet Sohi, Canada's minister of infrastructure and communities.
