Canada to invest C$25M in environmental sustainability at Halifax port

The Canadian government yesterday announced it would invest C$25 million to support environmental sustainability, supply chain efficiency and decarbonization at the CN-served Port of Halifax in Nova Scotia.
The funding will include C$22.5 million delivered through the Green Shipping Corridor Program, which will accelerate development of the Halifax-Hamburg shipping corridor. The port will use the funding to acquire an electric locomotive and launch an inventive program to shift freight traffic from road to rail; prepare to host and potentially refuel alternative fuel vessels; establish a hydrogen production facility; and electrify port equipment to reduce emissions, according to a Transport Canada press release.
The remaining C$2.5 million will be awarded through the National Trade Corridors fund and will support the port’s ship-to-shore infrastructure project, which is designed to relieve congestion, expand terminal capacity and increase efficiency at the port.
"Our ports are essential to global trade and to Canada's economy,” said Minister of Transport and Internal Trade Anita Anand. “By investing in green shipping corridors, supply chain infrastructure and clean technologies, we're taking decisive action to reduce emissions.”
