Container counts climbed at Virginia port last month

In August, the Port of Virginia handled 188,658 20-foot equivalent units, up 24 percent compared with August 2011. The volume of rail containers handled jumped 22.8 percent to 34,528 units.
"We continue to set new thresholds on container volumes, and that is exciting to see," said Michael Quillen, who chairs the Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners, in a prepared statement. "What is more significant is that the market, I believe, is beginning to respond to all that we have prepared for: we have big ships calling that need our 50-foot draft, an increasing demand on rail and we're expanding our market."
Also in August, ship calls totaled 172 versus 151 in August 2011 and the Virginia Inland Port registered a 34.8 percent year-over-year increase in the number of containers it handled (3,465).
The Port of Virginia is served by CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, Bay Coast Railroad Inc. and Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad Co.
