The History of Containerization Foundation is backing a planned McLean Container Center at Kings Point as part of its objective to establish a containerization museum at the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Named after 20th century transportation innovator Malcolm McLean, the center will collect and preserve containerization records, photographs and other historical items.
The foundation is collaborating with a group of transportation pioneers who worked with McLean since the early days of container shipping to mark containerization’s 50th anniversary at a gala to be held April 27 at the Smithsonian. The event will commemorate the sailing of the first ships to carry containers.
The center’s board includes Paul Richardson, president of Paul F. Richardson Associate; James Devine, president of New York Container Terminal; Peter Keller, chief operating officer of NYK Line; and John McCown, chairman and chief executive officer of Trailer Bridge Inc.
“The 50th anniversary Gala is the vital first step we are taking to make certain that we document this revolution with historical accuracy,” said Richardson in a prepared statement.
The foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to preserving containerization’s historical impact on the global shipping industry.
