Today, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) announced its Genesee & Wyoming Australia Pty Ltd. (GWA) subsidiary completed the purchase of an intermodal and freight terminal in Alice Springs, Australia, from Asciano Services Pty Ltd. (AIO) for $9.2 million.

Pursuant to an agreement, GWA will sell certain assets in Cook, South Australia, to AIO, including a fuel-sales business. The sale of the assets and fuel business is expected to close in the third quarter, pending certain closing conditions.

The terminal purchase secures ownership of an important long-term asset on the Tarcoola-to-Darwin rail line that will continue to serve as a primary intermodal facility for customers in and around Alice Springs, GWI officials said in a prepared statement. GWA previously leased the rail yard from AIO.

GWI owns and operates short lines and regionals, and provides rail-car switching services in the United States, Australia, Canada, Netherlands and Belgium. On July 23, the company announced it reached an agreement to acquire RailAmerica Inc. for $27.50 per share in cash — a deal totaling about $1.4 billion in equity and $600 million in debt — pending Surface Transportation Board approval.
