The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has commissioned the first of four new Neo-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes at the Garden City Terminal at the Port of Savannah, the authority announced yesterday.The latest unit brings GPA's fleet to 23 cranes, more than any other terminal in the United States, GPA officials said in a press release.The Garden City Terminal will add another crane every two weeks until late April, which will bring the total number to 26 this year. GPA will have 20 Neo-Panamax cranes and six Post-Panamax cranes, with four additional Neo-Panamax units on order, port officials said.When all 30 cranes are in place, the terminal will be able to handle more than 1,000 container moves per hour, according to the port."Expanding our capabilities means we are able to grow along with our customers, and adjust to changes in the logistics marketplace, such as increasing vessel sizes," said GPA Chief Operating Officer Ed McCarthy.
