Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) this week reported that the ports handled 5.25 million 20-foot equivalent container units in fiscal-year 2024, down 2.3% compared to TEUs in FY2023.

“While we experienced lower container volumes, we have been through cycles before and are optimistic about the future,” said GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch in a press release. The fiscal year ended June 30.

Compared to the pre-pandemic year of FY2019, GPA’s fiscal performance equates to a 3% compound annual growth rate, according to a GPA news release.

The GPA had a record year in roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) cargo, handling 876,000 units of autos and high/heavy machinery in FY2024, an increase of 21% compared to FY2023.

Last fiscal year, GPA brought online 120 acres of ro/ro storage at Colonel’s Island. Another 300 acres are available for expansion, according to the release.

In addition, the GPA recently completed construction of the Garden City Terminal West facility and continues to add new ship-to shore cranes and rubber tire gantry cranes.

GPA is served by several railroads, including CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and Golden Isle Terminal Railroad.
