Georgia port pumped up volume in FY2011

In fiscal-year 2011, which ended June 30, the Port of Brunswick, Ga., boosted auto and machinery volume 50.6 percent compared with FY2010. Auto units jumped 40.1 percent to 465,342 and breakbulk tonnage climbed 42 percent to 1.1 million.
“The Port of Brunswick continued its momentum, which led to a record year for auto and machinery throughput,” said Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) Executive Director Curtis Foltz in a prepared statement. “The 40 percent increase in total [roll-on/roll-off] units compared with the previous year allowed the GPA to surpass pre-recession levels and gain market share across the Southeast.”
To accommodate growing international demand for Georgia’s biomass fuels — including wood pellets — the GPA and Logistec recently agreed to upgrade the port’s East River Terminal. To be completed in January 2012, the project calls for deepening three berths and upgrading docks and a handling facility. The terminal’s annual capacity will triple to 1 million tons, according to the port, which is served by CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway.
