The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) yesterday announced the state’s ports handled a record 5.9 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2022, a 5% increase from 2021.

The Port of Savannah achieved four of its top five months for container volume in calendar-year 2022, with trade volumes peaking in August at an all-time high of 575,500 TEUs, port authority officials said in a press release.

GPA reported breakbulk tonnage at ports rose 16% to about 3.3 million tons in 2022 from 2021 levels. Colonel’s Island Terminal at Brunswick and Ocean Terminal at Savannah together handled 670,731 roll-on/roll-off units (vehicles and heavy machinery), a 0.4% year-over-year increase.

Total tonnage across all GPA docks reached 42.4 million tons, up 2%, port authority officials said.

“It was a challenging year, but collaborative effort[s] across Georgia’s supply chain ensured cargo movement remained fluid,” said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch.

Renovations are underway at the Port of Savannah to increase total annual capacity to 9 million TEUs by 2025. Berth 1 at Garden City Terminal will soon have room for vessels carrying more than 16,000 TEUs; Garden City Terminal West is expanding to 90 acres; and Ocean Terminal is transitioning to an all-container facility.

Genesee & Wyoming-owned Golden Isles Terminal Railroad serves Colonel’s Island with connections to CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
