Total intermodal volume fell 3.6% to 4,237,305 containers and trailers in fourth-quarter 2022 compared with volumes in Q4 2021, according to the Intermodal Association of North America's (IANA) intermodal quarterly report.

Domestic containers decreased 4.2% to 1,989,566, and trailers decreased 29.7% to 215,372, while international containers increased 0.9% to 2,032,367.

Total volume for all of 2022 showed a 3.9% decrease to 17,716,445 containers and trailers compared with the previous year’s total.

"The past year presented challenges for intermodal. All four quarters posted negative output," said IANA President and CEO Joni Casey in a press release. "The industry continues to address equipment availability, facility capacity and service with the goal of turning things around in 2023."

All but one of the seven highest-density trade corridors, which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume, were down in Q4. The Trans-Canada corridor, with a 7% gain, was the exception. The Southeast-Southwest dropped 14.2%, the largest decline, followed by the South Central-Southwest, which logged a 6.7% decrease.

The Northeast-Midwest, Intra-Southeast and Midwest-Southwest declined 4.9%, 3.3% and 3.1%, respectively, in the quarter. The Midwest-Northwest held losses to 2.6%.
