Total intermodal volume increased 7.5% to 4.7 million units in fourth-quarter 2024 compared to the same period a year ago, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA).
While trailer volume dropped 6.2% to 158,404 units year over year, domestic container and international container originations grew 6.5% to 2.2 million and 9.6% to 2.3 million, respectively. For full-year 2024, total volume rose 8.5% to 18 million units, IANA officials said in a press release.
All but one of the seven highest-density trade corridors, which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume, were up in Q4. The Southeast-Southwest jumped 23.5%, the Midwest-Southwest increased 19.4%, and the South Central-Southwest gained 18.8%. The Midwest-Northwest rose 9.9%; the Trans-Canada delivered 4.9% more volume, and the intra-Southeast added 2.3%.
The Northeast-Midwest recorded the only loss, at 1.6%.
