The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. (SLSDC) recently presented the Robert J. Lewis Pacesetter Award to the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor for posting the largest increase in international cargo among Great Lakes ports during the 2010 navigation season. The port now has won the award nine times.

In 2010, the port boosted total tonnage 73 percent year over year to 351,600 metric tons, primarily wind components, steel and construction equipment. The port also shipped 14 times more project cargo than the previous year, resulting in a 43 percent increase in overall shipments and total tonnage of 1.8 million metric tons.

“This port enjoyed one of its best years on record in 2010,” said Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor Director Peter Laman in a prepared statement. “We were fortunate to grow our business for the second consecutive year and are also very encouraged that 2011 shipments are more than 20 percent ahead of last year’s pace through July.”

Named after long-time Great Lakes Seaway trade analyst Robert Lewis, who died in 2001, the Pacesetter Award recognizes a seaway port that registers more international overseas cargo tonnage in a navigation season.
 
“President Obama has set a goal of doubling U.S. exports and it is this kind of strong performance by the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor that is going to help do this,” said SLSDC Administrator Terry Johnson.
