The Iowa Transportation Commission has approved more than $1.5 million in grant funding for a transportation-infrastructure development project under the Linking Iowa's Freight Transportation System (LIFTS) program.
The project will assist in providing more efficient transportation products via rail and truck in the Council Bluffs area, Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) officials said yesterday in a press release.
The $1.9 million project involves the redevelopment and expansion of an existing TSL Cos. container terminal in Council Bluffs. The grant will help fund the first phase of a three-phase project.
The first phase involves upgrading the current lot to concrete. Doing so will minimize maintenance costs and ensure that tractors and yard equipment can operate safely and efficiently, according to an Iowa DOT presentation about the project.
In addition, TSL will construct a temporary transload capable of transloading from hopper trailer to container. TSL will transload up to 300 containers of grain per week.
The LIFTS program provides grants for projects that address the changing demands of Iowa's multimodal freight system. The program funds freight projects that have economic and public benefits by enhancing the shipment of freight but are ineligible for state or federal highway funding.
