The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) set a record for container volume in May, with total container movements increasing 37% over the same month in 2020.

More than 128,900 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) moved through the Jacksonville, Florida, port in May, authority officials said in a press release.

JAXPORT's previous monthly container volume record of 123,700 TEUs was set in October 2019. To date in fiscal-year 2021 (which runs from Oct. 1, 2020, to Sept. 30, 2021), the port has registered nearly 950,000 TEUs, up 15%.

Year-to-date volumes for the port's two largest container trade lanes — Puerto Rico and Asia — are up 19% and 18%, respectively.

Meanwhile, a federal project to deepen the Jacksonville shipping channel from 40 feet to 47 feet is expected to be completed through Blount Island in 2022.
