The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach recorded double-digit decreases in cargo volumes in March compared with volumes in March 2022.
Los Angeles logged 623,234 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the month, down 35% compared to March 2022, port officials said in a press release. For the first three months of the year, the port handled 1,837,094 TEUs, down 32%.
The port recorded 319,962 TEUs in loaded imports, down 35%; 98,276 TEUs in loaded exports, down 12%; and 204,996 TEUs in empty containers, down 42%.
“While March cargo volume was lower than last year at this time, early data and monthly growth indicates a moderate increase in Q3,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka.
Long Beach registered 603,878 TEUs in March, down 30% compared to the same period a year ago. During the first three months of 2023, the port handled 1,721,326 TEUs, down 30% year over year.
The port recorded 279,148 TEUs in imports, down 34.7%, and 191,218 TEUs in empty containers, down 40.5%. However, exports climbed 16.9% to 133,512 TEUs.
