Long Beach port extends public comment period for proposed container terminal

The Port of Long Beach, Calif., is providing local residents more time to issue comments on a draft environmental study for a proposed $650 million container terminal on Terminal Island. The port will accept public comments until Dec. 2 instead of the previously announced Nov. 15 deadline.

The proposed “Pier S” terminal would be built on a vacant 160-acre parcel and feature the latest “green” technology, according to the port. The project calls for developing a wharf, berths and terminal infrastructure at Pier S to support container shipping operations, including a rail yard to facilitate on-dock rail movements.

The project would “showcase sustainable goods movement and generate up to 40,000 jobs in the region,” port officials said in a prepared statement.

The port recently released a draft environmental impact statement and supplemental environmental impact report, which analyze the project's environmental impacts and recommend mitigation measures.
