Lumina Sustainable Materials will develop a $14.3 million processing facility, logistics base and test laboratory at the Ports of Indiana-Jeffersonville, port officials announced yesterday.
The facility — the company's first in the United States — will be used to supply Midwest manufacturers with greener mineral additives, according to a Ports of Indiana press release.
“The ability to ship by barge into the Midwest, to leverage logistics facilities and services, and to partner with the port on future expansions and container exports makes Jeffersonville a perfect place for our U.S. processing and research facility,” said Lumina CEO Brian Hanrahan. “We mapped our target customers for the polymers, coatings, and construction industries, and Jeffersonville is in the center of it all.”
Lumina sources minerals from around the world, working with Purdue University, NASA and NASA subcontractors to develop mineral-based products, improve lunar simulants, and research space travel projects. In addition to mineral processing, the site will manufacture polymer additives.
Lumina will make use of the port’s barge and rail connections. The company will remodel an existing vacant building at the port and partner with the Ports of Indiana to develop a shared laboratory for research and community education.
