The Mississippi Transportation Commission late last month announced grants for various transportation projects issued through the state's multimodal-transportation improvement fund.
The commission authorized the Mississippi Department of Transportation to award the grants to short lines, ports, public transit systems and airports.
"Each mode of transportation is vital. Whether it's by transporting people, goods or services, all modes work together to promote economic growth and development through the state," said Tom King, the commission's chairman, in a press release.
The short-line grants include $400,000 for the Mississippi Delta Railroad, $400,000 for the Port Bienville Railroad, $297,000 for the Mississippian Railway and $246,400 for the Yellow Creek Port Access Railroad. The Mississippian Railway plans to replace rails and install crossties.
Funds for ports include:• a $700,000 grant for the Port of Pascagoula to improve the south terminal wharf;• a $696,046 grant for the Port of Natchez to construct a south liquid loading dock;• a $486,974 grant for the Lowndes County Port for a third lane-rail super expansion and tie repairs;• a $430,000 grant for the Port of Gulfport for a rail-access project and harbor drainage improvements; and• a $400,000 grant for the Port of Greenville to improve a connector road.
