In the third quarter, the Port of Montreal handled 10.1 million tons of cargo, up 10.1 percent compared with third-quarter 2007’s total.

During 2008’s first eight months, the port handled 1.1 million 20-foot equivalent units, a 9.9 percent year-over-year increase. Container volume rose 8.4 percent — the largest gain among all North American ports, including those in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Vancouver, British Columbia, according to the Montreal port.

“This confirms the Port of Montreal's position as leader, in terms of growth, compared to its competitors on the North American East Coast, four of which even posted declines,” said Montreal Port Authority officials in a prepared statement.

The world's largest inland port, the Montreal port handles about 26 million tons of cargo annually, operates its own rail network, and is served by Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Railway.
