Another container ship is arriving at the Port of Montreal each week. Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) recently added a third ship run between Montreal and Spain’s Port of Valencia, a major transhipment port that handles cargo from the Mediterranean basin and Asia via the Suez Canal.
The first ship to arrive at the Montreal port under the new MSC pact carried 2,816 20-foot equivalent units, 261 of which were refrigerated.
“This is excellent news for the Port of Montreal at a time when the effects of the worldwide financial crisis are starting to impact marine traffic all around the world,” port officials said in a prepared statement. “Our strategic advantages, such as the shortest transit times with Europe … and the existence of a highly efficient intermodal rail system, represent real advantages for shippers.”
The port is operated by the Montreal Port Authority, which operates its own rail network that’s linked to Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Railway.
