On Friday, Norfolk Southern Corp. Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Wick Moorman, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, and other state and local dignitaries attended a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Class I’s Memphis Regional Intermodal Facility in Rossville, Tenn. The $105 million terminal is part of NS’ $2.5 billion Crescent Corridor initiative, which calls for establishing a high-capacity intermodal route between the Northeast and South.

Slated to open in late 2012, the new facility is the second of four planned Crescent Corridor terminals that will be built during the next two years, including ones in Birmingham, Ala., Charlotte, N.C., and Greencastle, Pa. NS also plans to upgrade a terminal in Harrisburg, Pa. The Memphis facility will feature new gate and terminal automation technology, low-emission cranes and a main administration building built according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, NS officials said in a prepared statement.

“The Memphis intermodal facility will be an anchor of Norfolk Southern’s Crescent Corridor rail route connecting the Northeast and Southeast with high-speed, reliable, truck-competitive intermodal services,” said Moorman.

To be developed through a public/private partnership, the 2,500-mile Crescent Corridor initiative also calls for adding freight-rail capacity in Virginia and Mississippi. In addition, NS plans to build passing tracks and double tracks, improve signaling systems and enhance track speeds.
