Norfolk Southern Railway recently contracted STV/Ralph Whitehead Associates to provide construction management services for the 531-mile Heartland Corridor.

The engineering and construction management firm’s consultant team includes AMEC and Jacobs Associates, which will provide tunnel design review and construction inspection services; and Anderson and Associates, which will handle construction stakeout and clearance verification duties.

To be completed in 2009, the $186 million Heartland Corridor project calls for enlarging 28 tunnels — 10 of which were built for single track — from 174 to 3,302 feet to provide clearance for double-stack trains and removing other obstructions along rail lines in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. The project also calls for modifying seven through-truss bridges and nine slide direction fences, lowering tracks at three overhead bridges and raising three sets of overhead wires.

NS, the states of Virginia, Ohio and West Virginia, and federal government formed a public/private partnership to fund the corridor. The project also includes new intermodal terminals in Columbus, Ohio, Roanoke, Va., and Prichard, W.Va., which are not part of STV/Ralph Whitehead Associates’ contract.
