Norfolk Southern Railway recently opened a Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer® (TBT) terminal in Fayetteville, N.C., and contracted Tidewater Transit Co. Inc. to operate both the new TBT and a Dalton, Ga., facility.

TBTs are designed to transfer bulk products — such as plastic pellets, and liquid chemical and food products — from rail to truck.

Designed to handle both dry and liquid bulk products, the Fayetteville terminal includes 50 car spots, separate tracks for food products and cans, a steam boiler for product heating, 24-hour access and truck scales.

"The new Fayetteville facility … allows shippers to extend their distribution and terminal options into eastern North Carolina and South Carolina," said Mike Webb, manager of NS supply-chain and distribution services provider MODALGISTICS®, in a prepared statement.

NS also operates TBTs in Atlanta; Baltimore; Buffalo, N.Y.; Charlotte and Winston-Salem, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Chicago; Cincinnati (two), Columbus (two) and Cleveland, Ohio; Edgemoor, Del.; Elizabeth, Jersey City (Croxton) and Paterson, N.J.; Jacksonville and Miami, Fla.; Louisville, Ky.; Mobile, Ala.; Petersburg, Va.; Pittsburgh (two); Spartanburg, S.C.; Whiting, Ind.; and Willis, Mich.
