Rail News: Intermodal
Norfolk Southern Railway recently opened a Thoroughbred Bulk Transfer (TBT) terminal in Greer, S.C. — the Class I's 29th TBT facility.
TBTs are designed to transfer bulk products, such as plastic pellets, dry and liquid chemicals, construction materials and food products, from one transportation mode to another.
Quality Carriers Inc. subsidiary Transplastics — a dry and liquid bulk transportation service provider — will operate the Greer terminal, which features 50 car spots.
"The Greer facility will … extend [our] distribution and terminal options for plastics, chemicals, agricultural and construction shippers in the south," said Mike Webb, manager of NS' MODALGISTICS supply chain and distribution services group, in a prepared statement. "The new terminal also will allow NS to expand its participation in handling construction materials and food-grade products, such as flour, sugar and starch, in the Spartanburg area."
NS' other TBTs are located in Atlanta, Augusta and Dalton, Ga.; Baltimore; Bethlehem, Pa.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Charlotte, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Chicago; Cincinnati (two), Cleveland and Columbus (two), Ohio; Edgemoor, Del.; Elizabeth and Patterson, N.J.; Jacksonville and Miami, Fla.; Louisville, Ky.; Mobile, Ala.; Petersburg, Va.; Pittsburgh; Spartanburg, S.C.; Whiting, Ind.; and Willis, Mich.
