NS program to tie free equipment storage time to service performance

On July 11, Norfolk Southern Corp. plans to introduce an intermodal equipment storage program at its Bethintermodal facility designed to tie terminal free time to service performance.

The “1 or 3” program will offer domestic intermodal shippers one day of free equipment storage time if NS grounds a load and notifies a receiver within three hours of the railroad’s published scheduled availability (the day of notification plus the following day); and three days of free time if the Class I grounds a load and notifies a receiver more than three hours after the published scheduled availability (the day of notification plus the following three days).

Available for all domestic containers and trailers, the program applies to traffic destined to the Bethintermodal facility in Bethlehem, Pa.

The program will help improve terminal throughput and provide shippers more time to reschedule drayage appointments if a train is delayed, NS officials said in a prepared statement.

By Sept. 1, NS will expand the program to its terminals in Albany, N.Y.; Atlanta and Austell, Ga.; Ayer, Mass.; Baltimore; Charlotte, N.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Croxton and Erail, N.J.; and Harrisburg, Morrisville and Rutherford, Pa.
