Rail News: Intermodal
It took more than a month to complete repairs, but Norfolk Southern Corp. has reopened its New Orleans intermodal terminal and yard that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina Aug. 29.
The terminal is handling inbound and outbound shipments. Because of local curfews, the terminal will operate between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Meanwhile, the Class I is again handling rail cars at Oliver Yard, which serves local industrial customers and interchanges cars with the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad.
"The restoration of intermodal service will assist with the transportation of reconstruction and relief materials to the Gulf Coast region," said Bob Huffman, NS vice president of intermodal operations, in a prepared statement.
