The Port of New Orleans' board last week approved a contract for program management and program control services as part of the multiyear due diligence and permitting process for its new Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) container facility in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana.
The contract was awarded to HDR Engineering Inc. Progress on the container terminal project to date includes land acquisition in December 2020, initiation of the permitting process in June 2021, an award to AECOM for preliminary design and permitting support in July 2021, and ongoing engagement with industry and community stakeholders.
The next steps will include consideration and evaluation of a potential terminal operator and financial partners, port officials said in a news release.
The LIT would occupy about 350 acres and include a 3,500-linear-foot wharf. Located within the federal government’s $14 billion flood protection system, the site features a 50-foot Mississippi River channel.
The terminal will be designed to accommodate large ships and help the port grow its container-on-barge service, port officials said. The port has access to six Class Is through the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad and to several interstates.
