The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is stepping up rail projects at the Port Newark and Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine terminals. Last week, the authority announced it has authorized $141 million for the projects and will complete the work two years sooner than expected.
To be completed between 2007 and 2009, the projects include building a second lead track to ExpressRail Elizabeth and completing the facility’s on-dock, 18-track rail terminal; and constructing the ExpressRail Corbin Street rail support facility, which will integrate rail traffic from the three on-dock ExpressRail facilities.
“Rail volume at the port has grown an average of 17 percent a year over the last 10 years,” said PANYNJ Chairman Anthony Coscia in a prepared statement. “That growth will continue over the next five to 10 years, which is clear evidence that our investments in rail are needed now.”
