Federal officials have announced a $2 million grant for road and infrastructure improvements necessary to establish a new inland port in Hall County, Georgia, that will allow an expansion of operations through the Port of Savannah.
The planned Northeast Georgia Inland Port will provide a direct link to the Port of Savannah via Norfolk Southern Railway, according to a press release issued by U.S. Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnack (both D-Ga.).
The federal funding comes from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration. The project is expected to create nearly 700 jobs and generate $185 million in private investment.
Expected to open this year, the Northeast Georgia Inland Port will feature 9,000 feet of working track at opening; 18,000 feet of working track at full buildout; and an 80,000 container-lift startup capacity. The port will serve the manufacturing and logistics corridor along Interstate-85/985 in northeast Georgia, including Hall, Gwinnett and surrounding counties.
In March, Ossoff secured commitments from U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young to fund the completion of the port's harbor deepening project.
