Yesterday, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority and Midwest Terminals of Toledo officials dedicated the construction of a port authority-owned rail line at the Port of Toledo, Ohio. To be completed by year’s end or in early 2012, the rail line is the first phase of an $18 million project designed to convert a former Chevron refinery in East Toledo into the Ironville Terminal intermodal facility by 2014.

The work calls for installing about 7,200 linear feet of rail and eight switches. The line will connect with a nearby Norfolk Southern Railway line; the port already is served by CSX Transportation.

Consultants and contractors for the rail project include AME Technologies, Bowser Morner, Deitering Landscaping, DGL Consulting Engineers L.L.C., Hull & Associates, Mannik & Smith, MDA Engineering, Miller Brothers Construction Inc., Northwest Consultants, Timiny Railroad Construction, Toledo Fence and Viking Trucking.

Under a future phase two, the port authority plans to improve the dock face, and perform dredging and associated site work. Phase three includes the installation of a bulk material handling and conveyor system.

Funding for the redevelopment project includes two state of Ohio grants totaling $12.4 million, a $3.1 million award from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration and $5 million from Midwest Terminals of Toledo.

The port authority purchased the former Chevron site for $3.4 million in 2008 and formed a private-public partnership with Midwest Terminals of Toledo through a long-term property lease.
