The Port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) marked "significant gains" in auto volume during the first six months of 2019 versus the same period last year, port officials announced in a recent blog.

PANYNJ logged a 6.4 percent increase in automobile volume during the six-month period, including a 34.3 percent increase in autos moved during June.

Meanwhile, the port's total volume remains at record-breaking levels this year, port officials said wrote in Breaking Waves, a PANYNJ blog.

From January through June, the port moved 3,652,841 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo, a 4.4 percent increase compared to 3,450,469 for the same period in 2018.

Also, PANYNJ reported imported loads of 1,846,062 TEUs during the first six months of this year, up 5 percent versus the same period last year. Export loads during 2019's first half clocked in at 741,518 TEUs, a 2 percent increase.

After five consecutive months of record numbers, PANYNJ did log its first monthly decline in June, when it recorded 611,027 TEUs, a 2.3 percent decrease compared with TEUs during June 2018.
