The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) reported a 7.9% increase in overall cargo activity last month compared with February 2020.

Total volume last month was 625,120 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) versus 579,124 TEUs a year ago. The February 2021 results followed January's record-high volume at the port, PANYNJ officials said in the port's blog.

Imports at the port rose 11.2% in February compared with last year's level. Year over year, exports decreased 16.8%.

Rail volume at the port fell 10.9% last month from the previous year's February figure, totaling 49,540 containers. Port officials attributed the decrease in part to extreme winter weather conditions in the Midwest. Despite the lower rail volume last month, year-to-date rail volume at the port is 1.2% higher than during the same period in 2020, PANYNJ officials said.
