Cargo volume activity at the Port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) set a new all-time monthly record in March.
Volume rose 35% in March compared with March 2019, breaking the monthly record set in October 2020, port authority officials said in a press release.
Compared with 2020, March 2021 volumes posted even greater gains. PANYNJ moved 789,776 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) in March 2021 versus 560,830 TEUs 318,521 in March 2020, an increase of 40.8%.
Rail and auto volumes also posted gains in March. Rail volume climbed 7.8% from the previous year. From January through March 2021, rail volume grew 3.4% more than levels in same period a year ago.
Autos moved through the port totaled 46,686 in March, up 10.7% when compared with March 2020.
